Day 1

After a day of packing and a morning of scrambling to pack the car... Kari and I set off on our road trip across the United States.

This is going to going to be our longest single day drive on the whole trip. We are traveling from Pewaukee, WI to Kadoka, SD just outside of Badlands National Park. We will be traveling along Interstate 90 almost the entire route today. This is the route we are taking today:

Roadtrip Route

The journey thus far has been fairly uneventful with the exception of a few things. We passed a massive wind farm in Dexter, MN. There stood hundreds of wind turbines over 100 feet tall. They stretched from just off the road all the way to the horizon, as far as you could see. It was quite the sight. Kari and I were blown away by the shear amount of them... and then after driving past several more wind farms throughout Minnesota and South Dakota, the novelty began to wear off.

Next, we stopped for lunch in Austin, MN and soon after getting back on I-90.... I saw flashing lights in the rear view mirror after watching a police car do a U-turn on the intestate just before swoop in right behind us. Busted!!! Cop rolls up to the window and tells me I was doing 80mph in a 70mph. Lead foot is my middle name. After a few tense moments, and Kari batting her eyes, the cop rolls back up to the window to tell me that this would just be a warning. It must be our lucky day. Thanks for being so pretty Kari!

Then, we stopped into Mitchell, SD to see the famous Corn Palace. Americana at its finest. What a waste of time... oh! and money, as somehow we blew nearly $40 on souvenir magnets! After 10 minutes, Kari and I looked at each other and had a laugh, wondering why we were still there. Off we went. If you travel this way... skip this nonsense "palace".

We then continued on through central South Dakota, where apparently Dances With Wolves was filmed. Kari and I decided to put on the Dances With Wolves score by the great John Barry to maximize the experience. There were beautiful, rolling hills with fields of sunflowers. Pretty beautiful in the sunset light. Not too far down the road are farms with herds of buffalo numbering in the thousand.

Off to the Rodeway Inn in Kadoka, South Dakota. Let's hope there's no bedbugs! Tomorrow, we are off to the Badlands National Park, Mount Rushmore, and Crazy Horse Monument. Can't wait!
